Run-Away Chevy

by Linda

Years ago back when my friend DJ and I could run around Regency Park and not return until dinnertime; we would explore the "woods." The woods was a general term used for many areas of Regency that contained trees, (I know, bear with me here) and could be as large as a football field or as small as a driveway. Funny, how that is when you are a kid. Anyway, one day we were in the woods behind Crestview and Deborah Jane Drive and we saw a bunch of trash and building materials lying around dumped in the woods. We were excited about the old roof shingles; we started talking about making a fort with them. As kids, there is nothing more sacred than having your own FORT. DJ went off in one direction and I went off in the other. I saw two old Chevys up on blocks. One was black and the other was red. Strange seeing two old-fashioned cars in the woods like that. I didn't see DJ anywhere, and I started to walk down the hill when I looked over my shoulder and saw one of the cars rolling down toward me! Yikes! I started running down the hill and jumped over a large hole in the dirt and I saw at the bottom of the hill a little girl on the back porch of her house and I yelled at her to get inside, that a car was coming down the hill. I ran onto Deborah Jane Drive and my friend DJ was running onto the road from the next house up and we both were out of breath and at the same time started to tell each other about the car that was coming down the hill toward us! This was phenomenal, we both saw this car, and we both felt threatened, and we each ran for our lives. I even warned the little girl. But, you know, that car never did come down that hill...and DJ and I, well, we NEVER went back into those woods again. We were too scared. Something didn't want us there and when I pass those woods, I still think about those black and red Chevys up on blocks. Funny, over 30 years later, there is a black and red Chevy parked in front of someone's yard off of Universal Road...not far from our hill of terror. I still get goose bumps thinking about it.
